cent of the provincial workforce. Every year 15,000 British Columbians launch a new home-business. This growth has given working from home a new respectability it had never enjoyed before now. In response, many home entrepreneurs have
moved from hiding in basements to hanging out shingles for their home based business. Equipped with the latest affordable computer and communications technology, the home has become the practical and attractive workplace, for a home based business.
The evolution of the Internet and Information Technology has produced many new opportunities – such as Web page designers, software developers, service technicians, and online experts. The ease and availability of mobile telecommunications is also liberating many who were once desk bound, who now can function anywhere and anytime. Indeed, home-based businesses are often better positioned than large corporations to act quickly to changing markets
in this information age.
Yet, success is far from guaranteed. Small business failure continues
to occur at alarming rates. It is estimated that 50 per cent of start-ups don’t last beyond two years of business, and by the ten year mark almost 80 per cent have dissolved. Small businesses suffer a failure rate that is 14 times as
high as larger corporations. Since many home-based business opportunities do not
incorporate or get licenses, it is harder to track their failure rate,
but home based business associations estimate failure rates of their
members at least this high, perhaps even higher.
Often times the home has drawbacks in terms of a business location. Despite
your best efforts, you will inevitably have problems separating home
life from work life. The temptation to respond to email or phone calls
can extend your hours well beyond a sensible day’s work. Allotting
adequate space in your home for an expanding operation can be a
constant headache. Some home entrepreneurs soon become workaholics,
and yet others suffer acute loneliness and isolation.
